Building Delgovicia
The Roman Fort and Town of modern-day Malton and Norton in Minecraft
This project is for my MSc Digital Heritage dissertation and is titled ‘Building Delgovicia: A Practice-Based Investigation into Minecraft, Social Media, and Public Engagement with the Roman Fort and Town of Malton and Norton.’ This dissertation project, Building Delgovicia, explores how a practice-based reconstruction process, building the Roman fort and town of Malton and Norton in Minecraft, can be used to interpret archaeological data and engage new audiences. The project investigates whether creating an interactive digital reconstruction can help organise archaeological evidence, highlight gaps in current knowledge, and make the site easier to understand and visualise. It also examines how documenting this building process on social media can act as a public engagement method in its own right, alongside the finished digital reconstruction.
This project is currently ongoing. The survey for people engaging with the content on social media is available to fill in if you would like to get involved. Watch this space for updates.
